Ironstone was first patented in 1813 by Charles Mason in Stafforshire, England, ironstone is made of porous earthenware, coated with a fired-on glaze that makes it both impermeable to liquids and difficult to break. Note that marks with a lion and a unicorn on either side of a shield indicate that the manufacturer had received a “royal warrant” to produce its goods for the royal family.
